Violin soundpost adjustments made easier and more predictable...
The Soul Locator TM allows the measurement of all the parameters necessary for the placement of the movable parts on the violin. These parts include the bridge, soundpost and tail piece. You can accurately measure and control the position of these parts and their relationships to each other by using The Soul Locator TM.
With the accompanying record keeping system you can keep a record of these positions with your violin at all times. Your luthier can make changes, you can record these changes and if you don't like them, your luthier can return them to the original positions.
The Soul Locator TM is a measuring tool and record keeping system only. Its function is to make it easier and more accurate to measure and record the positions of the movable parts and small movements made to them. It in no way makes up for the needed experience your luthier has in setting, adjusting or installing these parts. Without proper practical experience and proper tools, adjustments can be made incorrectly and may seriously harm your violin. These adjustments are best left to the experienced luthier.
Place Soul Locator as shown in the diagram, with the bridge inside the notch on scale (A)
The Soul Locator has an identical scale on either side of the notch.
Hold down the scale to conform to the curve of the violin top, making sure that the scale stays parallel to and against the bridge.
Note the measurement for both sides from the edge of the bridge to the top of the F hole notch.
Record these measurements in the appropriate section of the chart.
Make sure the bridge is standing in its correct upright position with both feet in perfect contact with the top of the violin.
Place Soul Locator as shown in the diagram, with the tailpiece scale (B) facing up.
Measure the distance from the top of the bridge to where the strings contact the tailpiece. Do this for each string. Usually these measurements should be equal.
Record these measurements in the appropriate section of the chart.
Place the Soul Locator so that scale C and D are facing up.
Insert the short side of the Soul Locator into the right side or treble side F hole. As shown in the diagram, the top edge touches the soundpost.
The long side with scale C and D should be on the top of the violin and against and parallel to the bridge.
Record these measurements in the appropriate section of the chart.
Place the Soul Locator so that scale E and F are facing up.
Insert the lond side of the Soul Locator into the right side or treble side F hole. As shown in the diagram, the inside edge touches the soundpost.
The short side with scale E should be on the top of the violin and parallel to the bridge. Extend the sliding bar on scale E until it touches the bridge.
Record these measurements in the appropriate section of the chart.
